LE MUR (interview)

I first learned about Le Mur (Janine Ficklscherer bass, Matthias Graef guitar-vocals, Georgios Dosis drums) when they themselves posted one of their songs on my facebook. I got interested in knowing them and they sent me immediately their album. I was surprised to see that among the three people making up the band, one of them was Greek. The sound being somewhat progressive, somewhat psychedelic, and hard, and dark, and the drummer being from Preveza – that’s how this interview got to happen. Don’t miss the chance to listen to them!. Don’t miss the chance to listen to them!

How did you find yourself in Germany?

I came in 1998 with my mother and sister due to financial reasons.    I was 16 years old, after some pretty crazy times, military duty in Kastoria, schools, German lessons, and then I met Janine and Matthias. Ever since I was a kid in Preveza I dreamed about playing in a crazy Hawkwind-Sabbath-Metro Decay-Maiden-Floyd band and after some concerts and many hours in the studio we recorded in 2010-2011 In Tenebris. An English company wanted to release the album, but this proved to be a lie. They left us waiting for a year, while we already had new material entitled Silentia Nova, which was released from Tribal Stomp, thankfully.

What will happen with In Tenebris? Will it be released from someone else?

We hope that in the beginning of the summer it will be released from Tribal Stomp, AT LAST!

How did you come up with this sound? I mean it’s as if every single song comes from a different musical style. Which are your influences and how are those shown in your music?

Our influences are many Each of us has their own. Janine grew up with lots of punk, mostly from America… She used to listen lots to The Distillers or Blink 182 when she was a kid. Then she discovered Anathema and started to change. She’s also a fan of Dead Can Dance and of Hawkwind. Matthias started with Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Deep Purple, then listened to Black Sabbath and, as he’s told me, his life was never again the same! For me, my first album was from Trypes – Ennia Pliromena Tragoudia. After a while I ordered Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast from Rock City. Lots of metal and rock, Pink Floyd etc. Our sound became tight after lots of rehearsal, nothing strange, we’re just a band which turns on the amplifiers and plays without external aids, like triggers etc.

Nice stuff… What kind of elements did you add to the group? Does “Technical progress and other suicidal stuff” has something of Greek new wave in its sound, like from Villa 21 of the first two albums, or is it just my impression?

To be honest, I had Metro Decay and Stereo Nova in my mind when we were writing this song. Indeed in this album I included many elements of Greek music. Tolios from Trypes was one of the reasons why I started playing drums… chaotic but also very straight. But in general I like this atmosphere lots… of course the darker the better… that’s why I listen to lots of metal, for example Celtic Frost, and I become the uneasy spirit of the group… and that’s how various contrasts are created in our music and in our sound. Things in Germany are insanely difficult for a group like us… particularly in the region we come from… but you can 1-2 good festivals per year and all generations come join them. Stoner Psychedelic space rockers… stuff like that. Nowadays the term neo-krautrock is being heard lots, and we’ve been included in it. This is good, since it might create a new scene. https://www.facebook.com/groups/456428187802430/?fref=ts

Now that we’re talking and I’m listening to your album wearing headphones, I noticed that the third track has Greek lyrics. When I listened to it from the speakers, I didn’t get that. I can’t understand everything now, but tell me the title of the song and what it says.

In the first two albums there will be a ghost track, this has to do with the story of the trilogy and we’ll reveal it in the third one, which we’re working on as we speak. In Silentia Nova we’re talking about a life period that’s full of loneliness and despair. That’s what I’m talking about on the third track. “I’ve made a huge web which protects my life, but the days drift by aimlessly, enlarging my wound, unexpected visitors are trapped following my breath, but me, I hide again from my fear inside my cage” etc.

How do you write your songs, your lyrics? What is it that in general affects/inspires you in writing music?

We all agree that the greatest influence on our music and lyrics comes from life itself, everyday life. This sounds a bit cliché, and maybe it’s a bit romantic, but all three of us work in heavy industry every day, go from work to home etc., and some of us in various shifts… The only place where we are free and make no compromises is the rehearsals. Every one puts together what we think is the best for the song at that moment. If it works, that’s great, if not, we move on… Playing around with the guys is done through team work and that’s why we always feel like it – even if the timetables are… German!

A question on your personal life… How’s life for a Greek in Germany? I mean, in a country where things, I imagine, are more “square”, the sun doesn’t shine that much etc.

I like it here lots. Yes, in the beginning it was hard, but Germany embraced me and offered me lots of opportunities and CHOICES. The past years I’ve built my own little world, with my girlfriend, my friends, the job, and of course the band, and I’m very happy for that. The German system is indeed a square one, but at the same time this provides with an unbelievable sense of security, for example with the health system etc. No country is perfect and I know that, because in the past due to my work I got to know half of the world. But for me Oberhausen in Germany is the most appropriate place… Regarding the sun, I don’t mind it at all… It’s better for me if it doesn’t come out at all, in any case I’ll be in rehearsal… If I want the sun, I come down to Preveza, in its beautiful beaches, and I recharge.

How come your album cover is made by Helmut Wenske?

Wenske is god. The entire album would never come out without the help of Underground Äxpärten. It’s an organization with a Psychedelic-stoner rock radio, festival etc. One of them, Dieter, arranged everything for Silentia Nova to be released. Wenske was an old friend of his. We sent him a demo and after a while he replied that he liked our music a lot and that he would gladly give us one of his works. This touched all of us a lot, but especially for me, it was a landmark, because when I was a kid I loved his work, and a friend of mine had this huge poster in his room back in Preveza… And then, after a few years, I’m on the phone with him and he graces our album. UNBELIEVABLE.

It’s the beauty that comes our way and sends our minds journeying (do we ever return?). What about the concerts? Is there an audience for this music? Is it easy to play often?

It’s hard with the live concerts. There’s no scene, so very few possibilities. Especially here where we live, in the Ruhr valley, which is an industrial area and people don’t feel like listening to this kind of music… They listen to what’s on the radio. In general the music culture has declined in relation to the previous decades. We have 4-5 live shows a year, but they are good shows, I mean shows in which people come to listen to that kind of music. In my opinion, I have the impression that something is changing gradually and maybe we’ll have more shows. At the time being, we’re happy with what we’ve got.

How are things with the album’s distribution? Did you work on it as well or only the company? Are there copies left or is sold out? Do you know if any shop from here has ordered it?

Both us and the company worked on the album’s distribution. The company worked mostly abroad. The album went very well. The first copies are almost sold out. In Greece I think that Anazitisi Records had our album. I remember that in our last contact with the company, they told us that the copies in Greece were sold very quickly, and this was especially pleasing for me.

That’s great! I unfortunately got to know you only when you posted a song on my page! So, basically, the album has sold without you holding any concerts. How come this happened? Do you think it was in part due to the Internet?

The Internet is an unbelievable medium. It’s responsible for the fact that the music culture is in decline, that the small concerts and scene don’t exist anymore (at least here), but it’s also responsible for what’s happening to bands like us. There are pages (like yours, for example) where one can learn about DIY/underground bands like us and this creates another kind of culture – I won’t analyze its advantages and disadvantages. It remains a fact that through the Internet we attracted the attention of a group of people which are obsessed with music, as we are. Underground contacts such as Underground Äxpärten, who are old rock folks and who are on a quest for music and come to our few concerts to support us.

Which Greek groups do you know of? What are your next plans? Is there anything else you want to add?

From Greece, I like Planet of Zeus. I like to listen to Greek jazz, like Takis Barberis. In Tenebris will FINALLY be out in a while! It’s normally our debut album, but it got stuck in England in 2011. In a while we’ll start recording our third album, which will conclude the trilogy. We also have some concerts scheduled for the summer. If more people in Greece get to know us, perhaps someday we’ll come play there as well. This would be insane for me. Thank you a lot for your time and support!

THE GRANITE SHORE Once More From The Top

Occultation

The first album (after a 10 '' and a 7 '') of Granite Shore is pop and only pop. There is nothing else than moonlit, velvety and exquisite melancholy pop music! The songs, all written by the talented Nick Halliwell, emitting a gentle sadness, the voice of Halliwell also emits an incredible lyricism. The very fragile the management, recorded sound, the excellent and yet bitter nine days' wonder, the sweet now, therefore, ... with the nice organ colouring beautifully and finally the amazing widows and orphans, are some reasons to get this album, which has been released on cd and on vinyl (with different cover)!

Τα πολύ εύθραυστα the management, recorded sound, το εξαιρετικό και συνάμα πικρό nine dayswonder, το γλυκό now, therefore,…

DRUG FREE YOUTH "the avocado index" (nsm030/lp & cd)

Drug Free Youth is a one-man psychedelic garage rock project by a guy named George living in Thessaloniki, Greece, and this is his second album. Then there’s of course the split single with Vibravoid. The album has 19 short tracks some of which are instrumentals. The shortest tracks are only under one-minute-long and even the longest ones are only over three minutes in length. The music has most obviously been influenced by the psychedelic forerunners from the 60’s (for example Chocolate Watchband, 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, Electric Prunes etc.) and the album’s sound achived with vintage guitars, organ, bass, drums and vocals is pretty authentic as well. There just might be some drum machine use in there as well, or listen to yourself for example the otherwise very 60’s instro styled track ”Pulsating Yellow Heart”. In addition, the use of mind-expanding effects is very frequent. A couple of tracks are sung in Greek, which gives some nice ethnic extra vibe. I think that the best pieces are often the grooviest, most danceable ones that bring to mind 60’s dance hall parties. There is also some more experimental stuff on the album like ”Thieves of Forgotten Dreams”, ”Miniature Ninjas” and ”Surveillance Alphabet”. My favorites include the wacky and psychedelic Faces from the Past” that has also been included in my Astral Visions internet radio show, the pounding “Time”, fast, melodic psych pop treat “Veronique” as well as the opener cut ”Doppegänger Love”. The album has a nice amount of fuzz and tremolo guitars and just suitably cheesy organs and this is a very recommendable package for all those who like 60’s styled psychedelic garage rock. You can download the album even for free, but it’s also out on CD and vinyl, but in very low quantities. (by Dj Astro)

THE LUCK OF EDEN HALL 7'' single

Fruits De Mer records

This four tracks 7'' of The Luck Of Eden Hall from Chicago contains very nice songs. The tracks bangalore and this is strange (have you heard with headphones?) from the last album of the band Alligators Eat Gumdrops and two covers. The Doors’ crystal ship, where Curvey and his company rearranging it brilliantly, while the magic is the execution in the sound of the mellotron, which gives it another dimension. The cover of the black sheep of the SCR is highly atmospheric and fairly enjoyable. An exciting single!
Το 7’’ των, από το Σικάγο The Luck of Eden Hall, περιέχει τέσσερα τραγούδια. Τα bangalore και this is strange (το έχετε ακούσει με ακουστικά;) από το  τελευταίο άλμπουμ του γκρουπ Alligators Eat Gumdrops και δύο διασκευές.

MARSHMALLOW OVERCOAT The Complete Sound

This box set has all the releases by the legendary Marshmallow Overcoat!

I believe that Marshmallow Overcoat are one of the greatest psych-garage bands from 80's till now. Incredible band, with such great songs- some of the best we've ever heard- plus pure psych-garage attitude.
She's so satisfyinh', psilocybin explosion, groovy little trip, echoes in time, I've barely seen you, suddenly Sunday, 13 ghosts, home, getaway girl getaway world, dead of night (fab bonus track), kiss the tears, oceans from home, caveman, dia de los muertos, psilocybic mind, the spell I'm under, (we're the) knights of fuzz!

Δίσκοι όπως το The Inner Groove, το καταπληκτικό Try On… το A Touch Of Evil,

POCKET SIZE Exposed Undercurrents

Peter Pedersen from Sweden (Stockholm), guitarist-singer-writer created the Pocket Size to reveals his musical concerns and Exposed Undercurrents is their second album after the The Hornplayer From The Milky Way which was released in 2010 . With him, on this album, there is a multitude of musicians who accompany spotlessly, playing various instruments where the Pedersen wanted to have as a common denominator the love for jazz music. This album is a series of some amazing progressive songs, which are imbued with a variety of other nuances such as psychedelia, jazz of course, hard rock, the sound of Canterbury etc! The exceptional orbits for example, is an exquisite instro with the organ to dominates, the beats on drums to give a more jazz dimension, and the aura that colors the air which reminds Arzachel and Julian Savarin! The enkamouflerad is a hard rock song, with the classic ... ..hard rock rhythm that makes you want to move everything on you! The windmill is an infernal prog that similar songs not easily written in recent years. The brief duration fm and berlin are the most psychedelic while the chromosome is a magical and amazing song! Overall this is a very good album, full of strength, fresh sound and amazing songs! Recommended for many hearings !
Ο Σουηδός (Στοκχόλμη) Peter Pedersen, κιθαρίστας-τραγουδιστής-συνθέτης- δημιούργησε τους Pocket Size για να μας αποκαλύπτει τις μουσικές του ανησυχίες και το Exposed Undercurrents είναι το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους ύστερα από το The Hornplayer From The Milky Way το οποίο είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 2010.

La Chinga
s/t

The Canadians La Chinga doesn’t hide their influences on their debut album. And if they wanted, i don’t think they can manage it, since the 70s hard rock sound dominates from the first seconds of the first song! Bands such as, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and a tone of more relevant bands have stigmatized their sound. The bulky catty, with the fuzz bass, the to let silver, which is the most i can say somewhat psychedelic, with a guitar orgy ala Hendrix, are two of the four songs that touched my almost nonexistent sympathy to the 70s revival bands ! The other two are the exquisite la chinga with slightly MC5 extensions and of course the insuperability the universe is mine! A hard meteorite which brings to mind the best moments of the early Purple and Sabbath. Wild and untamed.
Τα άλλα δυο είναι το θεσπέσιο la chinga με τις ελαφρώς MC5 προεκτάσεις του και φυσικά το ανυπέρβλητο the universe is mine!
Mondo Drag
 s/t
The album by Mondo Drag is a wonderful dip in the best moments of Deep Purple, the Urian Heep, and the Swedes Dead Man, so to mention a more new band! Their songs I imagine that will revolutionize the fans of this sound, is full of organ, is early hard rock, is progressive, the the dawn has a great melody and a fantastic spin, the hard/space shifting sands sounds angry, the most prog. plumajilla is a fantastic composition, while shakeskin is very loud and a song with a feeling, just fantastic !! I am sure that every time you hear the songs you will become increasingly addicted to them. Invest with confidence!!!
Child
s/t

The Australians (fromMelbourne) Mathais Northway-guitar voice, Jayden Ensor-bass, Michael Lowe-drums, formed the Child in 2012. They are playing a demonic heavy/blues with the rabid guitars that scatter the stoned and completely acid solo to our stunned heads! I don't have to say many things but only that the five songs trees, stone by stone, all dried up, mean square, blue overtone storm/yellow planetary sun are five ways to love the blues again, listening to heavy blues !!! Oh yeah, and what an amazing cover !!!
Δεν έχω να προσθέσω πολλά πράγματα παρά μονάχα ότι τα πέντε τραγούδια τους trees, stone by stone, all dried up, mean square, blue overtone storm/yellow planetary sun  είναι πέντε τρόποι για να αγαπήσεις ξανά τα blues, ακούγοντας heavy blues!!!

SPIRALMAZE Back To the Center

Spiralmaze are from Crete (Chania) and they are, in a way, the continuation of Soundtrap. The band members are George Arestis guitar-synths, Aris Terzakis bass, Eftihis Chelioudakis drums and John Mor guitar. “Back to the Center” is their first album, has a nice production, a nice cover and contains 7 instrumental tracks. The power space track multiverse with its hard guitars, remipede with a trance intro, sampled oriental vocals and metal guitars inside the whole space atmosphere, the seductive dub myriad small creatures and the longest day (part II), which includes literally the sound that Spiralmaze love (this is an explosive mix of space rock, progressive, dub, trance and heavy guitars), are what literally lifted me up. Genuine descendants of Ozric Tentacles and of all related groups, Spiralmaze are taking this music many steps ahead (in space!)! Get it!
Το Back to the Center είναι το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ, έχει σωστή παραγωγή, ωραίο εξώφυλλο και περιέχει 7 instro κομμάτια.

THE RED PLASTIC BUDDHA Songs For Mara

The new album of the extraordinary The Red Plastic Buddha called Songs For Mara and is their third. It incl. songs like she's an alien, go, girlfriend-with an amazing organ solo, in which pop elements are evident, and of course some more new-psych, there is a beautiful cover of a house is not a motel, the ugly trip of staring into the void, the being human, an loving and acoustic lullaby, the trip inside this house and cosmonauts, two garage rock dynamites and among the other songs there is the unbelievable psych/paisley entitled stuck on zero! An amazing song with very psychedelic guitar sound/mood/aura, that send you directly to the 80s and in the corresponding groups! Finally, the girl like you, can be a simple garage song, but it is also a song you want to hear 10 times every morning to have good mood the whole day! A song that sticks in the mind like a bee to honey! Overall this is an album that combines the pop sounds with some psychedelic guitar passages, many 80s references and of course the strong personal element of the gifted Red Plastic Buddha, which in this album, that will be released soon in cd and vinyl, except band members, Timothy Ferguson, Dav Kling, Eric Ahlgren, Aaron Barber, involved quite a few musicians among them and the Gregory Curvey of The Luck Of Eden Hall, but also the congenial pop creator Phil Angotti.
Το νέο άλμπουμ των θεσπέσιων The Red Plastic Buddha ονομάζεται Songs For Mara και είναι το τρίτο τους. Περιέχει τραγούδια όπως τα shes an alien, go, girlfriend-με ένα καταπληκτικό σόλο στο όργανο, στα οποία τα pop στοιχεία είναι εμφανή, όπως φυσικά και κάποια πιο νεοψυχεδελικά, υπάρχει μια όμορφη διασκευή στο a house is not a motel, το άσχημο τριπάρισμα του staring into the void, το being human, ένα τρυφερό και ακουστικό νανούρισμα, τα trip inside this house και cosmonauts, δυο ροκ γκαράζ δυναμίτες και μεταξύ των υπόλοιπων τραγουδιών υπάρχει και το απίθανο psych/paisley με τίτλο stuck on zero!

COLOR HAZE To The Highest Gods We Know

Elektrohasch
The new (eleventh) album of German friends comes two years after their last, extraordinary She Said! And here the Colour Haze lost in stoner, and attention, psychedelic landscapes. And I say psychedelic regardless if I think the stoner music is far from classified psychedelic enough. Okay, probably some time, some groups have achieved something in their sound, but in general I think the term psych/stoner is not so successful. Ah, well keep going ... the Colour Haze, as I wrote just above have assimilate absolutely their hard influences and have put some psychedelic elements even now, after so many years, they have a way to enchant and convince their intentions. In the plus of this album add the captivating 12-minute title track, to the highest gods we know, a instro with guitar coloring sometimes like east/improvisation, and sometimes like spanish caravan, while the violins beating mercilessly their softness !!! Masterpiece! I don't know how it came to Colour Haze and wrote such a piece, but I believe that tied perfectly with their sound!
Στα συν του άλμπουμ και το σαγηνευτικό 12λεπτο ομώνυμο κομμάτι, το to the highest gods we know, ένα instro με την κιθάρα να χρωματίζει άλλοτε σαν ταξίμι, και άλλοτε σαν spanish caravan, ενώ τα βιολιά να χτυπούν ανελέητα την απαλότητα της!!!

A LITTLE PIECE OF THE GEW-GAW'S STORY

A LITTLE PIECE OF THE GEW-GAW'S STORY

Hello to everyone!
Until middle 90’s, here in Greece there were no magazines dedicated to the new psychedelic scene, except from some stray references in some more underground magazines (Psychachogos, Veluria’s Home, Merlin’s Music Box, Mary Jane etc.)
This is one of the reasons that the publication of gew-gaw was decided.
gew–gaw’s first issue was released in late of 1995.
Until 2000 there will follow 8 issues in greek whose pages, tapes, cds distributions, that the people of gew-gaw had taken over, helped the greek audience to become familiar with bands like The Smell Of Incense (thanks to Nick Stavroulakis), Fantasyy Factoryy, Quarkspace, Vibravoid, Baby Woodrose, Mandra Gora Lightshow Society, Carrots, Mother Superior, Trip Hill, Cactus Cooper, Tadpoles, Lamp Of The Universe, Brown Nose,  etc.
In 2000 the circle of the greek issues closes and the first issue in English was ready. There will follow two more until the chapter gew-gaw closes permanently.
